What exactly is DATUM?

DATUM is Anteodata's governed data platform. It is not a data lake, a catalogue or a reporting tool. It is the layer that turns data into an operable corporate asset: with real metadata, proactive governance, embedded quality, industrialised DataOps and controlled publication to the business — all in one coherent product, not in isolated pieces.

How is DATUM different from building a data architecture in-house?

Building a corporate data architecture from scratch takes 3 to 6 times longer, requires large specialist teams and generates technical debt from day one. DATUM encapsulates that intellectual property — metadata, DataOps, governance, security, publication — and deploys it progressively and non-invasively. The comparison is not with another software product; it is with the avoided cost of doing it ad hoc.

What technology stack does DATUM require?

DATUM runs on Databricks, Delta Lake and Confluent Cloud as its base. It is cloud-agnostic: it works on Azure, AWS and GCP. Snowflake is compatible but optional — it can be replaced by Databricks SQL Warehouse. Azure Data Lake, DBT and  are not required.

What does DATUM include in its core, without add-ons?

The DATUM core includes: full corporate metadata, end-to-end DataOps circuit (auto-discovery, loading, transformation, quality, calculation, publication and monitoring), governed data model with traceability and historisation, corporate layers (RAW, Operational, Common Data, Business), security with federated identity and least privilege, true incrementality and governed publication to the business. There is no reduced version of the product.

What does DATUM not do?

DATUM does not replace your analytics platform, data warehouse or visualisation tools. It does not generate reports or dashboards. It does not replace engineering teams. It governs, organises and operationalises data so that everything else works better and costs less to maintain.

Does DATUM work in any industry?

Accepted Answer

Yes. DATUM is a horizontal platform suitable for any industry. Where recognised international standards exist — BIAN in banking, ACORD in insurance, FHIR and mCode in healthcare, and equivalents in retail, distribution and services — Anteodata incorporates them as the basis of the data model, accelerating implementation and reducing semantic risk from the first domain. The Industry Accelerator Pack add-on delivers that acceleration with pre-configured models, glossaries and KPIs by sector.

How is DATUM contracted?

Contracting is structured in four independent blocks: the initial Assessment, the annual platform licence, technical implementation services and the progressive onboarding of business domains. Functional add-ons and managed operation services are added according to each client's maturity and needs.

Does DATUM have different versions or tiers?

Accepted Answer

No. DATUM has a single complete product at its core. What varies commercially is the deployment model, the number of domains onboarded, the add-ons activated and the level of operation contracted. There are no reduced or capped versions of the product.

How much does DATUM cost?

DATUM is a premium enterprise platform. The investment varies depending on the deployment model, the number of domains, the add-ons and the level of operation contracted. To get an estimate tailored to your organisation, the starting point is always the Assessment, which is also partially creditable against the subsequent licence contract.

Can DATUM be deployed in the client's cloud?

Accepted Answer

Yes. DATUM is offered in two modes: SaaS managed by Anteodata, where Anteodata operates the platform and the client consumes it as a service; and Customer Managed, where DATUM is deployed in the client's own cloud infrastructure. The product is identical in both cases; what changes is the operational responsibility for the infrastructure.

Are cloud infrastructure costs included in the price?

Accepted Answer

No. The price of DATUM covers the product and its associated services. Cloud infrastructure costs (Databricks, storage, Confluent Cloud) and analytical consumption are independent and fall on the client, unless expressly agreed otherwise.

Question 13

What is the Assessment and why is it mandatory?

Accepted Answer

The Assessment is the formal process prior to any DATUM implementation. It lasts approximately 8 weeks and serves to understand the client's real situation — maturity, domains, stack, organisation, friction points — and to define the target model, implementation scope and adoption plan. Without that diagnosis, any commercial proposal would be an estimate without a real basis.

Does the Assessment have a cost?

Yes. The Assessment is a consultancy service with deliverables and real team dedication from Anteodata. Part of its cost is creditable against the subsequent DATUM licence contract, reducing the initial investment for clients who decide to proceed.

Question 15

How long does a DATUM implementation take?

Accepted Answer

The technical platform launch takes between 4 and 8 weeks, depending on the complexity of the environment, network and connectivity to sources. Onboarding each business domain requires an additional 12 to 16 weeks. Scaling to new domains and cultural evolution are ongoing from that point.

Is it invasive to existing systems?

Accepted Answer

No. DATUM connects to existing sources without replacing them. The design principle is explicitly non-invasive: data governance and operations are added on top of what already exists. Source systems, BI tools and analytics platforms continue to function; DATUM brings order between them.

What does the client need to get started?

Accepted Answer

There is no technical entry requirement. What is needed is genuine executive commitment and availability of business stakeholders to participate in the process. The Assessment determines exactly where the client stands and what path to follow. If the organisation is not ready to implement DATUM directly, Anteodata first proposes a prior consultancy plan.

What is a Data Owner and why is it critical?

A Data Owner is the business stakeholder responsible for a data domain. It is not a technical role: they decide which data is critical, what quality it must have, what it can be used for and who has access. Without real Data Owners with effective accountability, data governance does not work regardless of how good the platform is. One of the first tasks of the Assessment is to identify and activate them.

What is the Data Office and do we need one before we start?

The Data Office is the team that operates data governance on a day-to-day basis: it manages the initiative backlog, coordinates owners and stewards, monitors quality and ensures the framework functions. It does not need to be established before starting; Anteodata helps define and set it up as part of the implementation process. In some cases it can temporarily assume that role through the CDO as a Service offering.

What if we don't have a CDO?

That is common. Most of the organisations we work with do not have a formal CDO or have one without real authority. DATUM does not require a CDO to be implemented. What it does require is an executive sponsor with decision-making capacity. The CDO role can be built or reinforced during the process, and Anteodata can temporarily cover it if needed.

Does data need to be moved or copied somewhere?

Not necessarily. DATUM works on data wherever it resides, applying governance, metadata and DataOps without requiring a prior migration or abrupt centralisation. The architecture is built progressively, domain by domain, without disrupting existing operations.

Is DATUM Data Space Gateway a European data space?

Accepted Answer

No. It is an advanced DATUM capability that enables organisations to participate in data sharing ecosystems in a governed way. It is aligned with the Common European Data Spaces framework and the Eclipse Dataspace Protocol, but it is not itself a European data space or the implementation of a specific sectoral initiative.

Does it replace internal data governance?

No. The Gateway extends internal governance beyond the organisational perimeter. DATUM remains the platform that governs data within the organisation. The Gateway operates at the federated edge, not in the core.

Can all data be shared?

Accepted Answer

No. Only assets that have been certified, classified for external use and authorised by their Data Owner may be published. Data with restricted classification, personal data without adequate anonymisation or assets without minimum metadata cannot be published.

Does it also work for consuming external data?

Yes. The Gateway is bidirectional: it allows publishing internal assets in external ecosystems and consuming assets published by third parties, integrating them into the DATUM circuit with full origin traceability, quality validation and lineage.

What maturity level does the organisation need?

Accepted Answer

Operational internal governance is needed: active Data Owners, a catalogue with functional metadata, at least one certified data product, data security classification and basic Data Office operations. Without that foundation, the Gateway cannot operate correctly.

Is it a base or advanced DATUM feature?

Accepted Answer

It is the Domain Sovereignty & Data Sharing Pack add-on of DATUM. It is not part of the base product core. It is activated when the client has the necessary maturity and wants to extend data governance to governed external sharing.

What kind of data can be monetised?

Accepted Answer

Only assets that are certified, governed and authorised by their Data Owner for external use. In practice this applies to derived data products (market aggregates, benchmarks, behavioural models, curated datasets from a domain) and rarely to raw transactional data. Personal data without proper anonymisation, restricted-classification data and assets without functional metadata cannot be monetised: they require prior governance, classification and data product work before being offered to third parties.

What commercial models does DATUM support for data monetisation?

Three main and combinable models. Per use: the buyer pays per measured consumption (queries, downloads, API calls). Per subscription: continued access to the asset for a period, with formal and revocable conditions. Per partnership: agreed exchange between organisations, with or without direct economic compensation, common in sectoral consortiums. DATUM does not impose the model — it records the commercial terms agreed with the buyer and provides the technical evidence (accesses, versions, duration) that supports billing or contract compliance.

How do you prevent the buyer from replicating or redistributing the data?

Through three combined layers. Contractual layer: usage conditions and the prohibition of redistribution are formalised in the agreement between parties. Technical layer: DATUM records every access with verified identity, version, timestamp and declared purpose, leaving an audit trail that can be invoked legally. Revocation layer: access to the asset can be effectively cancelled if the contract is breached. Absolute protection against non-technical replication (screen captures, human memorisation) does not exist in any system, but the combined technical-contractual approach meets the standards required in banking, healthcare and other regulated sectors.

Is there a real case of data monetisation with DATUM?

There are DATUM implementations in production and cases of governed data product publishing across different clients. Pure data monetisation as a revenue line — assets published with formalised commercial models to external third parties — is an emerging scenario in some clients, not yet a mass practice. It is honest to say that the technology piece is mature, the contractual models too, and what is often missing is the client strategic decision on which data to monetise and under which model. The governed sharing assessment supports that decision.
